YOUTH NEWS

A month ago Lauren and I took the youth group to Uplift church camp at Harding University. We really enjoyed spending time with the kids and watching them learn more and grow closer to God. It truly was an uplifting experience, both for us and the kids.

Being there brought back many memories of the times I spent at Uplift, and I was reminded of how old I’m getting. I can’t believe it’s been ten years since I’ve been a camper. Most of our youth weren’t even in kindergarten yet! Once during one of the worship services I caught myself thinking, “Boy these new songs just aren’t as good as the ones we used to sing.” Can you believe that?

I was also reminded of that feeling I used to get at camp. You know what I mean. It’s that feeling you have after you hear a good sermon, or when you read a particularly relevant passage in your Bible. The kids call it a “spiritual high”, and I think it’s the feeling you get from the presence of God. Sadly as I get older these feelings seem to be fewer and farther between. Why is that? I should be growing closer to God as I get older, shouldn’t I? Then why don’t I feel closer? Many things can keep us from God’s presence, but often the only thing between us and God is our own lack of effort. Larry talked about that in his sermon on Sunday night  about drawing near to God. He said if you want a relationship with God spend time with him, talk with him, listen to his word. The kids have a term for that too. They call it T.A.W.G. (time alone with God) and it’s a staple at church camp. Let’s learn a lesson from our youth and spend some TAWG this week.
